Sinopsis Pada tahun 1943 selama Perang Pasifik, ibu Mahito Maki yang berusia 12 tahun, Hisako, terbunuh dalam sebuah serangan udara di Tokyo. Ayah Mahito, yang memiliki pabrik amunisi udara, menikah lagi dengan adik perempuan mendiang istrinya, Natsuko, dan mereka mengungsi ke tanah miliknya di pedesaan di mana mereka tinggal bersama beberapa pembantu tua.
